Jim was born in Calgary, where he lived his entire life except for time spent in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. After leaving the Navy, he joined the Calgary Fire Department and rose to the rank of Division Chief. He was talented at sports, and was an active member of the Naval Reserve, RNA Club, and the Royal Canadian Legion.
