Biographical Comments
Captain James R. Keats (Jim) served with the Calgary Fire Department for 31 happy years. He loved his job and was good at it. His crew respected him and knew him to be fair, both as a fire fighter and a man. His good nature and smile could light up a room and did on many occasions.

For Jim there were only two seasons in the year, hockey and football! He played both with the Fire Department and other leagues in Calgary.

He was injured several times in his career. When his helmet was damaged in a fire, thereby saving his life, he was awarded by the manufacturer, the first silver commemorative helmet in Canada.

He was the type of man, when he was diagnosed with stage four cancer, not ask why me, but why not me? We all know it takes a special kind of person to risk his life for another. Fire fighters are that kind of people. I was privileged to be married for 49 years, to a true hero – a fire fighter.
