Biographical Comments
Captain Edward Briggs succumbed to the effects of leukemia following a distinguished 33-year career with the Calgary Fire Department. His death was among the first in Alberta recognized as a compensable line of duty death. The Province of Alberta recently passed a law recognizing the fact that fire fighters, while in the line of duty, are exposed to toxins which may not appear until many years after exposure. Under this new law, they would now be compensated and recognized as a line-of-duty death, thus their families would be eligible for certain, previously unavailable, benefits. Rest in peace Edward, you are missed!
