Biographical Comments
Wayne was a patient and caring man. He never relied on anyone else to get the job done; he did what needed to be done. Wayne took pride in every job and never thought twice about doing what others thought might be a menial task, such as refilling water bottles for the hockey team or making the station coffee. Wayne tackled every job the way he ran the fire department, conscientious and a respect for all. Wayne lost his father at a young age but was fortunate to be mentored on the job by his Uncle Stan Brooks. Wayne excelled through the ranks of the Calgary Fire Department, beginning as a rookie in 1966 all the way to retiring as Fire Chief in 2005. Wayne’s career would be characterized by a rugged determination and by instilling the change he wished to see in others, in himself.
