Bob joined the Port Alberni Fire Department in July 1969 and worked as the Breathing Apparatus Technician for many years.

Outside of work, Bob rode quarter horses and bred Dalmatians with his wife, Lesley. He enjoyed watching NASCAR races and Dale Earnhardt, traveling to several races in the United States. He even owned a 2004 Dale Earnhardt signature Monte Carlo. Crafting silver and opal jewelry was also one of his hobbies.
