Biographical Comments
“Bert” was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was compassionate, fair and quick witted. Bert began his career in 1973 with Vancouver FR/S. After a brief stay he joined Coquitlam FR/S where he rose through the ranks to the position of Assistant Chief. Bert reluctantly retired in 2005 after 32 years of dedicated service. Bert was instrumental from the Chief Officer side in the formation of the Department’s Water Rescue Team, as well as the Honour Guard. Bert was profoundly touched by the welcoming, resolve and brotherhood of the IAFF and indeed all New Yorkers, while attending Memorials of Fallen Fire Fighters in New York after 9/11. Bert lost a courageous battle with Mesothelioma. He would have been proud to be honoured at this year’s memorial.
(Submitted by the Bertrand Family for the 2010 Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial)
