It is with deepest regret and sorrow that we report the line-of-duty death of Captain William V. Gustin, IAFF 12th District Local 1403 - Metropolitan Dade County Association Of Fire Fighters, Florida. Brother Gustin, 70, passed away on March 16, 2025 from suicide related to a post-traumatic stress-related illness.
A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at 11:30 AM at Kaseya Center 601 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, FL 3313.

Biographical Comments
captain gustin, serving 47 years with mdfr, served most of his mdfr career in battalion 5c and was the captain of station 2c before his current training division assignment. a 51-year fire service veteran, gustin was intimately involved in training throughout his career and widely regarded as among the most knowledgeable fire instructors in the industry. he began his fire service career in the chicago area, naperville fire department in naperville, illinois, and was a lead instructor in miami-dade’s officer development program. gustin began his journey in 1973 as a volunteer firefighter. a third-generation firefighter, he carried forward the proud legacy of his father and grandfather, who both served as officers in the chicago fire department. in 1978, he joined mdfr, rising through the ranks to become a lieutenant in 1983 and a captain in 1986. he led engine 2 for more than 30 years. he was in the training division at the time of his death.
he was a technical editor of fire engineering, an advisory board member of fdic international, and a keynoter during fdic 2011. gustin was a founding member of the fema urban search and rescue working group and an educator at miami-dade college. he was also a prolific author and teacher.
