It is with deepest regret and sorrow that we report the line-of-duty death of Captain John Blackwell II, IAFF 14th District Local 632 – New Orleans, Louisiana. Brother Blackwell II, 53, passed away on Feb. 24, 2025 after succumbing to occupational cancer.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Mar. 5, 2025 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. at Metairie Baptist Church, 401 Codifer Blvd., Metairie, Louisiana 70005. The funeral service will follow at 12 p.m.

At 53 years old, he was a respected rescue captain and a mentor to countless firefighters, known for his ability to teach and inspire those around him.
Captain Blackwell was more than a firefighter; he was a brother to his colleagues, a living legend in the fire service, and a pillar of strength in his community. His passion for the job was fueled by an unshakable sense of duty and a deep love for the craft of firefighting. He had a unique ability to instill confidence and skill in everyone he encountered, shaping them into not just better firefighters, but better people.
Tragically, Captain Blackwell passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a legacy of bravery, compassion, and selflessness. His sudden loss was deeply felt by his family, friends, and the entire New Orleans Fire Department, as well as the countless lives he touched throughout his career.
Captain John M. Blackwell II will forever be remembered as a hero who dedicated his life to protecting others, a mentor who led by example, and a man whose spirit and legacy continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.
