It is with deepest regret and sorrow that we report the line-of-duty death of Captain John Whitney, IAFF 3rd District Local 2548, Greenfield, Massachusetts. Brother Whitney, 56, passed away on July 22, 2026, from occupational cancer.



A funeral service will be held on Sunday, Aug. 2 at 2 p.m. at Second Congregational Church, 16 Court Square, Greenfield, Massachusetts 01301.

Captain John D. Whitney
Line of Duty – Occupational Cancer

It is with profound sadness that I regret to announce the line-of-duty death of retired Captain John D. Whitney following his courageous battle with occupational cancer.

Captain Whitney was appointed as a full-time firefighter on February 4, 2001, and was promoted to the permanent rank of Captain on September 1, 2011. He retired from active service on May 23, 2026, due to a diagnosis of occupational cancer.

Captain Whitney was a respected officer, mentor, colleague, and friend. His leadership, experience, and dedication left a lasting impact on the Greenfield Fire Department and on the many firefighters who had the privilege of serving alongside him.
