Biographical Comments
GROTON, Conn. - The Naval Submarine Base New London (SUBASE) Fire Department is grieving the loss of one of its senior leaders.
Assistant Fire Chief Jeffrey Post passed away Wednesday, August 2, after battling a long illness.
“We are extremely saddened to report that the SUBASE New London Fire Department, the First and Finest, lost one of our bravest,” said Fire Chief Tommy Clapsadle. “Assistant Chief Jeffrey Post was a great leader in the department and a valued team member and colleague. His passing leaves a hole in our hearts that cannot be filled.”
Post, a native of Mystic, Connecticut, began his firefighter career as a volunteer and joined the SUBASE Fire Department in December 2001.
He had been an Assistant Fire Chief at SUBASE since August 2016.
Post was a dedicated firefighter, EMT, and HAZMAT and Rescue expert. Intelligent, proud, and team oriented, his impact traveled well-beyond SUBASE’s fence line.
He helped lead the SUBASE Fire Department response team that rushed to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine to assist in controlling and ultimately extinguishing the USS Miami (SSN 755) fire in May 2012.
Most recently, he notably contributed to the technically complex, confined space rescue of a Ledyard, Connecticut man who fell down a 30-foot well in November 2022.
A dedicated Fire Service Instructor, his commitment to training and mentoring the next generation of Firefighters through his efforts at SUBASE, the Region, and the Connecticut Fire Academy has left a legacy.
SUBASE Fire Department Stations 1 and 2 have been adorned with black and purple bunting in Post’s honor.
“We ask that you keep Jeff’s family in your thoughts and prayers as they and we move through this extremely difficult time,” asked Clapsadle.
Details on services will be forthcoming.
Submarine Base Firefighters IAFF Local F-219 would appreciate any and all resources or acknowledgments you may be able to offer the family as they navigate this difficult time. After just shy of 23 years of Federal service Jeff leaves us too soon but leaves behind many stories of bravery, courage, and a love to help recruit and train the next generation. Jeff unfortunately also leaves behind a wife, Chrissy and his daughter Olivia and son Johnny as well as his parents Cindy and Steve Post as well as his brothers Dan and Scott.
Jeff was a committed member of the Connecticut Fire Academy as well as Eastern CT Fire Academy as several volunteer departments in south eastern CT.
