It is with deepest regret and sorrow that we report the line-of-duty death of Captain James Hathaway, IAFF 8th District Local 1348, Muncie, Indiana. Brother Hathaway, 52, passed away on March 8, 2024 after succumbing to occupational cancer.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 13 from 4-7 p.m. and Thursday, March 14 for an hour prior to services at Union Chapel Ministries, 4622 N. Broadway, Muncie, IN 47303; phone: (765) 288-8383. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, March 14 at 11 a.m. at Union Chapel Ministries.

Biographical Comments
It is with deep sadness that we announce that Captain James Hathaway passed away today after an over 2-year battle with occupational gastric cancer. Captain Hathaway joined the Muncie Fire Department on July 5, 2005. In Captain Hathaway's career he personally responded to over 5,000 calls in his service to his community that he was born and raised in. In doing so, his oncologist has reported that his career as a firefighter presumably was a main contributing factor to his cancer diagnosis. Lieutenant Captain was just 52 years old. However, Captain Hathaway loved his career as a Muncie Firefighter, and we are all but certain he would do it all over again if given the chance. We have lost a brother; Muncie has lost a hero; and his loved ones have lost a husband and a father.
