Biographical Comments
Bruce began with City of Calgary fire department September 13, 1954 for the princely pay of $228.08 monthly. During his 27-year career with the department, he worked not only as a fire fighter but also as a Public Relations Officer. He had vision and started the museum with the first of many pieces of equipment he salvaged before they were turned into scrap. He took dozens of photos of pieces of apparatus, which are in the records of the museum. Bruce developed the procedures for fighting high-rise fires and designed and made the first tool belts the fire fighters carry with them. Because of his imagination and insight, his station was the first to mount the fire fighters’ equipment in the seats of the fire truck.

Bruce retired as Captain in November 1981 and enjoyed retirement to the fullest. He sailed his sailboat far and wide, began water colour painting when he was about 60, spent endless hours researching genealogy, was an accomplished woodworker and also carved wood and soapstone.
