Summary
Lieutenant Robert P. Neary, 59, and Fire Fighter Daniel Sweeney, 25, died of injuries sustained from a wall collapse while battling a 5-alarm blaze at a vacant warehouse on York Street, located in the Kensington section of Philadelphia. As the fire fighters investigated an extension of the fire at an adjacent furniture store, the rear wall of that building collapsed on them. Two other fire fighters were injured.

it is with deepest regret and sorrow to report the line-of-duty deaths of lieutenant robert p. neary and fire fighter daniel sweeney of iaff local 22 – philadelphia, pennsylvania. brothers neary, 59, and sweeney, 25, died on monday, april 9, 2012 from injuries sustained while battling a five-alarm fire and subsequent building collapse. brother neary leaves a wife and three adult children.

the visitation for brother neary will be held on friday, april 13, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. at the givnish funeral home, 10975 academy road, philadelphia, pennsylvania 19154, (215) 281-0100. prior to the visitation, there will be a procession to the funeral home. fire department personnel and iaff members will assemble beginning at 2:30 p.m. both the memorial service and interment will be private. more details on the procession and visitation will be provided tomorrow.

the visitation for brother sweeney will be held on friday, april 13, 2012 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and on saturday, april 14, 2012 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at st. cecilia’s church, 535 rhawn street, philadelphia, pennsylvania 19111, (215) 725-1240. the funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m.. interment immediately following the service at holy sepulchre cemetery, 4001 w. cheltenham avenue, philadelphia, pennsylvania. additional information and updates available at www.iaff22.org.

Biographical Comments
Fire Fighter Daniel Sweeney followed in the footsteps of his father, Captain David Sweeney (Ret) and joined the Philadelphia Fire Department in July, 2006. He worked at Ladder 10 since 2007. During his short career Daniel was the reciepient of two unit citations.
He was a proud member of Local 22 and the Philadelphia Fire Department.
