Biographical Comments
Senior Fire Fighter Derek Sharman died from work related illness on May 6, 2021, at 35 years of age. He was a proud member of the Calgary Fire Department for 15 years and had completed the required Officer’s training in order to serve as an Acting Lieutenant.
Derek always wanted to be a Fire Fighter, and he lived and breathed the Calgary Fire Department. Being a Fire Fighter was his passion and purpose in life. During Derek’s career he served with the Station teams, the Hazmat team, and the last several years with the Technical Rescue team. Derek was one of the first to volunteer when needed, and served on the recruitment interview committee and on the Board of the Fire Fighters Burn Treatment Society.
Derek was a physical fitness fanatic who trained hard and worked out nearly every day and encouraged others to do the same. His gym and friends have started the annual Sharman Strong Challenge where others are challenged to do some kind of extra physical exercise on his birthday October 12th. Derek spent part of every winter in Thailand at a Muay Thai martial arts school; it was his special place to decompress from the rigours of the Fire Fighter world.
Derek will be remembered as a man with a strong faith who was dedicated to service, people, travel, and adventure. Derek was deeply loved by his family and friends, and we miss him everyday. God Bless all First Responders and those that support them.
