The Cincinnati Fire Fighters Union Local 48 announces with profound sadness the line-of-duty death of 12-year veteran Fire Fighter Ryan Zwick, age 43, following a courageous battle with occupational cancer.
Brother Zwick's death is recognized as an Occupational Cancer Line of Duty Death, due to the dangers and exposures he confronted during emergency incidents throughout his career.
Ryan was assigned to Truck 35 in Westwood where he spent his entire career. Throughout his career, he served with honor, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others. He was a valued member of the Cincinnati Fire Department and a respected Brother within Local 48.
"Today, we mourn the loss of a Brother, a Fire Fighter, and a public servant who dedicated his life to serving the citizens of Cincinnati," said Joe Elliott, President of Cincinnati Fire Fighters Union Local 48. "Ryan's passing is a heartbreaking reminder of the sacrifices Fire Fighters make throughout their careers and the lasting impact occupational cancer continues to have on our profession. We ask the community to keep Ryan's family, friends, and fellow fire fighters in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."
Ryan's death serves as a sobering reminder of the occupational hazards associated with the fire service and the devastating impact occupational cancer continues to have on Fire Fighters and their families across the nation. Occupational cancer remains one of the leading causes of fire fighter deaths nationwide and is a growing concern throughout the fire service.
The Cincinnati Fire Department and Cincinnati Fire Fighters Union Local 48 are working closely with Ryan's family regarding funeral and memorial service arrangements. Details regarding services and opportunities to honor Brother Zwick's life and service will be announced once they become available.
