It is with deepest regret and sorrow that we report the line-of-duty death of Firefighter/EMT John P. Martinez, IAFF 10th District Local 1230, Contra Costa County, California. Brother Martinez passed away on November 12, 2023, after succumbing to an occupational cancer.

Biographical Comments
It’s with great sadness, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, Con
Fire, announces the passing of our brother, Firefighter John Martinez. Firefighter Martinez
succumbed to his battle with cancer earlier this morning. Firefighter Martinez was diagnosed
with occupational related cancer in 2022. This courageous firefighter and soldier lost his battle
this morning, with family by his side.
John joined the Con Fire family as a firefighter on October 2, 2017, and spent the majority of his
time assigned to Engine 9 in Pacheco. He was an emergency medical technician, a member of
the Con Fire Honor Guard, and a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local
1230.
Martinez was also a former U.S. Army soldier that spanned five and a half years, with tours in
Iraq and Afghanistan. John leaves behind his father, John Martinez Sr., wife, Sara, and two
children, Dominic and Caylee (ages 12 and three). His commitment and dedication to his family,
the community, and his brothers and sisters at Con Fire will forever be remembered. Flags will
be flown at half-staff at all Con Fire facilities until further notice. Details of Firefighter Martinez’s
memorial service will be shared in the coming days.
