It is with deepest regret and sorrow to report the line-of-duty death of Firefighter Yaroslav I. Katkov, IAFF 10th District Local 2881, Sacramento, CA. Brother Katkov, 28, passed away on July 29, 2019, after suffering from heat stroke while training with his engine company.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at 11 a.m. at the North Coast Church, 2405 N Santa Fe Avenue, Vista, CA 92084; phone (760) 724-6700.

Biographical Comments
CAL FIRE Firefighter Yaroslav Katkov (Yaro) was born 12/18/1990 to parents Nadia Katkova and Igor Katkov in Kharkov, Ukraine. In 1994 the Katkov Family relocated to Toronto, Canada and in 1996 moved to the United States. In 1998 the family moved to San Diego from Oakridge, Tennessee. Yaro graduated Scripps Ranch High School where he participated in several sports including football, track, and wrestling. While on the wrestling team, Yaro won the San Diego City Wrestling Championship.

Yaro attended San Diego State University and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance. With a desire to serve others, he began his fire service education at Miramar College.

He began his fire service career, as a San Diego County Reserve Firefighter assigned to Fire Station #79 on Palomar Mountain. In August of 2018, he was hired by CAL FIRE San Diego and assigned to Fire Station #16 in the Community of DeLuz.

Firefighter Katkov was a dedicated, professional firefighter who came to the United States from Ukraine with this family as a child, learned the English Language, graduated from college, and achieved his dream of becoming a firefighter.

On July 29, 2019 Firefighter Katkov passed away after suffering a medical emergency while training with his engine company. He is survived by his father Igor, mother Nadia, brother Sam, and girlfriend Ashley as well as his fire department family.

Services are planned for 11:00 am Tuesday, August 6th, 2019 at the North Coast Church, in Vista CA.
